# Rate Limits

> Request limits per token and account, and 429 handling.

Limits apply per token; write and paid limits also apply per account, so extra tokens don't add capacity. Dashboard use doesn't count.

## Limits

| Limit | Allowed | Applies to |
| - | - | - |
| Read | 120 per minute | `GET` endpoints |
| Write | 30 per minute | `POST`, `PATCH`, `DELETE` |
| Paid | 5 per minute, 20 per hour | `POST /servers`, `POST /servers/{server_id}/resize` (also count as writes) |

## Failed Authentication

More than 20 failed authentications per minute from one IP return `429 rate_limit_exceeded` instead of `401`. Valid tokens are not affected.

## When You Hit a Limit

```text theme={null}
HTTP/1.1 429 Too Many Requests
Retry-After: 42
```

```json theme={null}
{
  "error": {
    "code": "rate_limit_exceeded",
    "message": "Too many requests. Retry in 42 seconds.",
    "details": {"limit": "120 per 1 minute"}
  }
}
```

Wait `Retry-After` seconds, then retry. `details.limit` names the limit; `details` is `null` for failed authentications.
