# Backups & Snapshots

> Daily backups, manual backups, and snapshots of your server's disk.

Backups and snapshots save a copy of your server's disk. Your server stays online while a backup or snapshot is created.

<Note>Backups and snapshots are not available in every location. The order page shows the **Backups** option, and the server page shows the **Backups** tab, where they are available. Snapshots are not available for Windows servers.</Note>

## Backups

### Enable Backups

* **New server:** select **Add daily backups** on the order page.
* **Existing server:** go to **Virtual Machines**, click a server name, open the **Backups** tab, and click **Enable Backups**.

The first backup runs within 24 hours.

Backups stay on for at least 24 hours.

### Run a Manual Backup

1. Open the server's **Backups** tab
2. Click **Run Manual Backup**
3. Optionally, add a label such as `before-upgrade`
4. Click **Start Backup**

A manual backup uses one of the 7 slots. For consistent data, power off your server before you run a manual backup.

### Restore a Backup

1. Open the server's **Backups** tab
2. Open the menu of a backup and click **Restore server**
3. Click **Restore Server** to confirm

<Warning>Restoring replaces your server's disk with the backup. Changes made since the backup are lost, and the server is offline until the restore finishes.</Warning>

### Disable Backups

1. Open the server's **Backups** tab
2. Click **Disable Backups**
3. Click **Disable & Delete Backups** to confirm

Disabling backups permanently deletes all backups of the server. To keep a backup, [convert it to a snapshot](#convert-a-backup-to-a-snapshot) first. Existing snapshots are kept.

## Snapshots

A snapshot is kept until you delete it, even if you delete the server. No backup plan is needed.

### Create a Snapshot

1. Go to **Snapshots** and click **Create Snapshot**
2. Select a server. It must be running or stopped.
3. Optionally, enter a name
4. Click **Create Snapshot**

You can also click **Create Snapshot** on a server's **Backups** tab. For consistent data, power off your server first.

### Convert a Backup to a Snapshot

1. Open the server's **Backups** tab
2. Open the menu of a backup and click **Convert to snapshot**
3. Click **Convert to Snapshot**

The backup moves to **Snapshots** and no longer counts toward the 7 backup slots.

### Create a Server From a Snapshot

1. Go to **Snapshots**
2. Click **Create New Server** on a snapshot
3. Choose a plan and complete the order

The new server is created in the same location as the snapshot. Its plan needs at least as much disk as the snapshot. Your files and apps come with it, and the new server gets a new IP address and new login details.

### Delete a Snapshot

Go to **Snapshots** and click **Delete** on the snapshot. A snapshot can't be deleted while an order that uses it is pending.
